I'm not really sure if this will help answer your question but I know for some hairs there are two different materials in unity that allows you to color them two separate colors. As for making it that way idk how to do that. Cause other hairs may only have one material. I assume it may be a blender thing or - youtube may help you?

If the nails do not include Hips, Spine, Chest, etc and only have the exact bones that they use then Modular Avatar wouldn't work, that could be the case for the that. You say you tried to drag them onto the armature where they need to go. If you added every single bone that the nails use onto the corresponding bones of your armature it should in theory work perfectly but perhaps you are missing one particular thing. Could you be not using all the bones included with the nails? How exactly did you do this, could you provide screenshots?

You just said the tip yourself, use a third party tool/plugin to make things easier. That is what VRCQuestTools is. Best size saver is to downscale resolution on your textures, set mesh compression, although I don't recommend that cause it makes your mesh look like shit remove gogoloco, or other excessive animations you don't need. Remove parts of prefabs/gameobjects that use lots of size. You could try using a script like Build Size Viewer to help show which files are bigger in size and which ones are using less on your build.
