Why exactly do people bump threads so frequently?

I feel like having a thread bumped more than once in, like, a 24-48 hour period doesn't contribute to actually getting the avatar files dumped (I mean technically, bumping barely has any sort of positive effect other than the one-in-a-million chance that someone already has the files but doesn't realize that others want it) and all it results in is me having to play whack-a-mole with threads that I'm monitoring for updates
