Beginner Question
-
Hello,
I am new to Ripping and have always been worried about uploading them to my account due to the fact I don't want my VRchat account to be banned or deleted for something that has to due with something I could have just not done.
I don't know if these are actual worries I need to have or if I just don't have them public I will be ok. I am not looking to sell anything or distribute I just want to make cute avatars for myself and learn how to customize them for myself.(The actual questions)
-
Will I need to worry if I upload files I don't own?
-
Could my account get banned because of me uploading File of avatars I don't own?
-
Is it illegal?
-
What are some Tips or Beginner Advice you would have for someone?
(I apologize if this is common knowledge or something I should have looked into before hand I just never found people that would talk about it positively and would blacklist people they found to even look at the pages or talking about it....)

I'm so sorry I think I posted this in the wrong category I just can't find a place to change it!

The category is completely okay I think it works for your question. But I'm not super knowledgeable in avatar ripping since I've never really done it not sure how people even manage to rip things from vrc but I think you should be fine if you use it privately especially if that avatar is popular maybe. I don't think you could get banned alone without someone reporting you/ taking the steps to ban you. but I haven't ran though this problem so this is just a guess.
But avatar making can be pretty hard at first glance but it's super easy once you get used to it tutorials on youtube have been the biggest help for me plus me just learning on my own.
This forum has so many assets you can use which have been kindly shared so you have a lot of options! -
Hey, it's alright! A mod can change the category for you if you ask or if they spot the thread themselves. I'm sort of intermediate, so I can sort of help with a few of your questions!

You won't have to worry depending on what files they are. EX: Let's say you download a booth model from here and it has a unitypackage. You won't get in trouble for placing that unitymodel in your projects and uploading it, generally. Now if you directly rip a model on VRC, that is a tricky thing if the model has an anti-ripping script like Gonso. Generally don't recommend this if you're new and don't know what you'll need to clean up a ripped model, you will have to do some research and there are people willing to help in Tutorials and New User Help!
-
Yes, sort of. I've never been banned myself so I don't know what the process is for moderation to check if a model is ripped or not. Best way to avoid is just not telling people if your avatar is ripped.
-
This is piracy, so yes-no. queue the "You wouldn't download a car" meme. Unless your country will literally break down your door for dowloading an asset shared online, then you should be fine!
-
My best tip: Use the search bar before making a thread when looking for a specific asset! Everyone is happy to help find assets if you include the booth or gumroad link in the "Looking For" category! Just be kind and don't be afraid to ask questions!

Thank you for answering! I have only been looking at unity models themselves really so I am glad that I have even more reason to stay clear from ripping directly from VRC. I have no intention of telling people I am ripping on vrc so I hope that will just make people not think twice about it.
I have already been saving threads for certain assets so I am hoping to start now that I have some clarification!
